Manny Cuevas inherited a lot from his father, including his love of fashion design. He built a cult following and headlined New York Fashion Week, and Mexico City Fashion Week. But while his career was on the up and up, Manny’s gut health was on a serious decline. After several years of misdiagnosis and botched surgeries, he was diagnosed with Crohn’s in mid-2014.
“My advice to every new ostomate is to find yourself in your own patience and you will find your new daily routine easier – and never forget that you are loved and not alone!”

Shortly after that diagnosis, Manny needed emergency surgery to remove a blockage in his large intestine. The blockage was causing immense pain and jaundice. On the way into the operating room the surgeon mentioned a colostomy bag for the very first time – needless to say – Manny’s head started to spin.
“It was scary! I was at the peak of my fashion career, and everything had to come to a halt.”
To make matters worse, Manny suffered complications and more surgeries. All of which took a huge financial toll, with Manny’s once- soaring business now ground to a halt. Feeling overwhelmed, isolated, and despondent, Manny turned to his support network for the lift he needed. His wife, children, and stoma care nurse each played a pivotal role in getting Manny the help his condition required, and the love he needed. Full of newfound hope, and a new care plan that worked, the clouds parted for Manny.
“Once I got my routine together for my colostomy which I’ve named ‘My Lil Friend’, living a full life became easier. I ride a bicycle, go canoeing, run, ride my motorcycle, swim, and play with my kiddos and family and enjoy every minute possible doing so.”
With Manny’s newly rediscovered zest for living life to the fullest, he’s become an advocate who’s determined to give hope to other new and older ostomates by advocating better health and the possibility of an active lifestyle.
Now, at the age of 50, Manny is 10 years into his stoma journey, and working on relaunching his business. It’s been a challenging task that Manny wouldn’t have the patience, energy, or desire to attempt without first finding his own happiness again.
