Alginate dressing
A seaweed derived dressing containing sodium and/or calcium ions. These dressings are highly absorbent and used for draining wounds.
Antimicrobial dressing
A wound dressing containing an antimicrobial agent that will kill or prevent growth and multiplication of bacteria.
Compression bandage
A bandage to deliver compression used to aid venous and lymphatic return in the management of venous disorders.
Filler
Filler dressings are dressings that are designed to go into the wound and to accommodate to the contours of the wound, whereas cover dressings are solid “sheet-type” dressings that are designed to cover the wound. Wounds with any depth require both a filler dressing and a cover dressing, whereas surface wounds require only a cover dressing. Filler dressings and cover dressings are available in both absorptive and hydrating forms, and in plain and antimicrobial forms. [17]

Foam Dressing
Waterproof multi-layer dressing containing an absorbent foam layer and other layers to provide absorbency and protection. Made with gentle silicone adhesive. Used for protection of friction and shear prone areas, or as an absorbent dressing.
Hydrocolloid
A waterproof, occlusive dressing that consists of a mixture of pectins, gelatins, sodium carboxymethylcellulose and elastomers. May be used as a primary dressing on shallow wounds or for protection, or as a secondary dressing on deeper wounds.
Hydrofiber® Technology
Used to make AQUACEL® dressings, is a unique proprietary fiber technology which absorbs and retains fluid by forming a cohesive gel. The AQUACEL® dressings, powered by Hydrofiber® Technology, are highly absorbent and most often used for managing wound exudate in highly draining wounds, but may also be hydrated and used to help maintain moisture in a dry wound.
Hydrogel
A water based gel which donates moisture and aids autolytic debridement.
Primary dressing
A dressing that comes into direct contact with the wound bed. Some dressings may be a primary and a cover dressing depending on the depth of the wound and the amount of drainage.
Secondary dressing (cover)
A dressing that is used to hold a filler and/or primary dressing in place when clinically necessary.
